The cave bear bone flute from the cave of Divje Babe is the most famous and resounding Slovenian archaeological find on a global scale. The musical instrument was and still is the subject of numerous researches, analyzes and theoretical discussions, as it originates from a time when there was only one human species on European soil - the Neanderthal.

The unexpected discovery of the flute more than 20 years ago fundamentally shook the now completely outdated ideas about Neanderthals as primitive humans, incapable of artistic, spiritual and abstract expression.

Based on all the findings available today, we can argue that this surprising find is the oldest evidence of musical creation in human history.

About the Flute

The flute was discovered in Divje babe cave near Cerkno and has been declared by experts to have been made by Neanderthals.

It is made from the left thighbone of a young cave bear and has four pierced holes. Musical experiments confirmed findings of archaeological research that the size and the position of the holes cannot be accidental – they were made with the intention of musical expression.

Boštjan's work

Boštjan continues the legacy of Ljuben Dimkaroski, the Slovene-Macedonian musician who first started playing the flute reconstruction.

Boštjan's latest recordings with the flute can be heard in BBC documentaries Prehistoric planet, music by Hans Zimmer, Anže Rozman and Kara Talve.
