The oldest instrument known to musicologists and archaeologists is the bone flute which was first made by a Neanderthal man approximately 60,000 years ago. It was found in a Palaeolithic archaeological site in Slovenia.
Nowadays, the prehistoric sounds of the Neanderthal flute are carried on by its reconstruction – tidldibab. The journey towards true virtuosity on this instrument is undertaken by Boštjan.
Boštjan Gombač is a well-known Slovenian multi-instrumentalist and composer of music for theatre, film, radio, and television, while at the same time frequently performing live artist.
Already back in the days of studying clarinet at the Academy of Music - University of Ljubljana under prof. Jože Kotar (graduated Summa Cum Laude) Boštjan was eagerly exploring diverse musical styles and approaches.
Traveling with and for music opened him new horizons in musical expression. As Boštjan Gombač puts it himself: "The sound itself is my guide and inspiration. The more unusual the sound, the greater the challenge, expressive possibilities, and joy it provides."
Boštjan Gombač's work over the last 20 years is comprised of about 140 albums, covering a vast specter - from world music to classical works, and soundtracks for 50 theatre pieces and 40 TV documentaries. In addition to clarinet, bass clarinet, soprano saxophone, fujara, and other wind instruments such as tin whistles and ocarinas, Boštjan has mastered musical saw, theremin, and bodhran. His sound arsenal is rounded up by a literal heap of other unusual, surprising, and downright strange sound-producing objects quite rarely seen in concert venues.
As a member of the acclaimed Terra Folk group Boštjan Gombač won BBC Radio 3's World Music Award among many accolades. Currently, he performs with groups such as Katalena, Bast, Bachology Quartet, Los Hermanos Muy Simpaticos, Sounds of Slovenia. In the past he has shared the stage with numerous luminaries of Slovenian popular, jazz, and classical music along with many world-famous artists such as Marc Ribot, Greg Cohen, Neil Innes, Tommy Emmanuel, The Cat Empire, John McSherry, Arvid Engegard, Susanne Lundeng, Knut Eric Sundquist, Theodossi Spassov, Howard Levy, Otto Lechner.
In 2017 Boštjan has received the highest award for culture in Slovenia.
